2020 Milestones & Habit Changes

The new year is off to a roaring start and I must say that this is the first year in a long time where I am actively setting up goals for the year. In the past, I have just taken life events as they come. All of my “projects” have been tackled in kind of a “just get in done” kind of mindset.

Since college, I think I can count 5 events of change in my life. That’s only 5 big changes in 15 years! That’s not much at all.

  1. Leaving my first job right after college (spent two years there) to move to Greece for 6 months
  2. Coming back to America and truly starting my career in capital markets
  3. Getting married
  4. Deciding to leave NY to move to Charlotte.
  5. Having our freakishly awesome daughter

Outside of these big life changes, I feel like my life, especially my career, has mainly been dependent on the choices I made in college. For example, I studied finance in college and the opportunities and trajectory of my career have mostly been dependent on that. Of course, there was a lot of hard work over time and moving up. But looking back at things, I can honestly say that I have not done much in terms of big pushes forward.

So I have made the choice to make more conscious choices to move forward instead of just taking life as it comes. Of course, I am happy that my previous life choices have prepared me with the knowledge, mindset, and tenacity to take on life’s up and downs. But I want to take a more active role in the changes in my life and not just plan out huge changes but even day to day habits, monthly goals, and yearly milestones.
Here we go… Here are my high level 2020’s goals. I have three categories.

Financial

  1. Set monthly no buys – I have set up 5 months throughout the year where I will not buy anything that cannot be classified as a necessity.
  2. Limit luxuries – I will prioritize home improvement over personal luxuries such as clothes, bags, jewelry, and shoes. All my luxury purchases will be rewards for hitting milestones in my overall personal or professional plans
  3. Passive Income – This one is pretty involved, but the main point of this one is to focus on setting up my passive income streams. My goal for the year is to set up three. One in the form of a managed fund investment, the second in the form of a self-published book, and the third in the form of a real estate investment. The book I write will focus on the topic of passive income so there is much more to come here. I will provide some excerpts and updates and time goes on.

Professional

  1. Resume strengthening – Obtain one additional professional certification
  2. Lead one large technology development

Home

This category is really just focused on the completion of projects that we have just been disregarding since we finished building three years ago
  1. Finish kitchen – Backsplash and steel countertop updates
  2. Master bathroom completion – Vanity lights, main mirror and shower door replacement
  3. Study floor update – marble checkerboard floor installation
I also want to make sure we have three family trips this year outside of the holidays. But I don’t really characterize this a “move forward” goal or a change in habit.
